The Toronto Maple Leafs are out, again. After Sunday night's Game 7 loss against the Florida Panthers, Leafs fans are left feeling cold — both emotionally and, as it turns out, literally.

According to The Weather Network (TWN), this week's weather forecast in Toronto is serving up a chilly blast from the past. The weather mirrors the last time the Leafs won the Stanley Cup — when they defeated the Montreal Canadiens in May 1967. It's a full-circle moment that nobody asked for.

From Wednesday, May 21 to Friday, May 23, daytime highs in the city are expected to be around 10 C.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Toronto might not even crack double digits — a rare cold snap that hasn't happened this late in this month since May 22, 1967, when the high was just 9.4 C.

Just last year, that same period saw temps soaring close to 29 C. That's a difference of around 19-20 C between 2024 and 2025!

TWN says a persistent weather setup featuring Arctic high pressure in the north and a stalled system in the U.S. is locking the region into a prolonged chill. The jet stream is sagging south, cutting Ontario off any warmth for the foreseeable future.

Southern Ontario's weather will see temperatures up to 10 C below seasonal, while parts of the northeast could fall 12 C short of normal.

As if that wasn't enough, rain is on the way too. It will sweep into the region Wednesday afternoon and stick around through Friday.

Some areas near the GTA could see 30 to 50 mm of rainfall by the end of the week. There's even a chance of isolated thunderstorms along the Lake Erie shoreline and the Niagara area.

To make it even more fun, strong easterly winds off Lake Ontario will keep lakeside communities especially cool. Wind gusts could top 60 km/h late Wednesday into Thursday. And since lake water temperatures are hovering around 10 or 11 C, it'll feel even chillier in places like Toronto.

However, there's light at the end of the rain-soaked tunnel. Temperatures are expected to bounce back to near-seasonal as we head into June.

Normal temperatures in Ontario this time of year, according to TWN

  • Toronto: 20 C
  • Ottawa: 21 C
  • Windsor: 22 C
  • Hamilton: 20 C
  • North Bay: 18 C
  • Thunder Bay: 19 C
  • London: 21 C

So if you're counting down the days to patio season, hang tight. Warmer, sunnier days are just around the corner!
