It appears that trick-or-treating in Ontario is all but cancelled this year, particularly in hot spot areas like Peel, Ottawa, York and Toronto.

The statement came from Ontario's top doctor, who asks residents of these areas to stay home on October 31.

However, University of Toronto infectious disease expert Dr. Isaac Bogoch has an entirely different view.

He says Halloween shouldn't be too challenging to do safely.

"Outside, wearing masks, restricted to family units, distant from others - is about as low risk as it gets," he wrote on Twitter on Monday.

"Still, [it is] important to adhere to local public health guidelines," he added.

Narcity has reached out to Dr. Bogoch for more, and we'll update the story when we hear back.

Ontario Public Health recommends spooky scavenger hunts with your household, pumpkin carving, or movie nights as Halloween activities this year.

The province is reporting 704 new cases of COVID-19 today, with 244 new cases in Toronto, 168 in Peel, 103 in York Region, and 51 in Ottawa.
