Toronto transit riders, heads up — there's a major TTC closure coming that could mess with your weekend plans if you're taking the subway.
The transit agency has issued a service alert for a full closure of an 11-kilometre stretch of the TTC's Line 1 subway this weekend, meaning shuttle buses and detours will be your new reality if you usually travel that way. Whether you're commuting, running errands or just trying to get around the city, this TTC closure could definitely throw a wrench in things.
According to the TTC, subway service on Line 1 will be fully shut down between St. Clair and Finch stations on Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 23 for planned track work. That's a 10.9-kilometre stretch on the eastern (Yonge Street) side of the U-shaped Yonge-University line — and yes, shuttle buses will be running to replace trains during the TTC subway closure.
Lawrence and North York Centre stations will be fully closed, so don't plan on grabbing a coffee or loading your PRESTO card there. The other stations along the closure — Davisville, Eglinton, York Mills, Sheppard-Yonge and Finch — will stay open for fare purchases and connecting buses and streetcars, but there won't be any subway trains pulling in.
If you need accessibility support, the TTC says two extra Wheel-Trans buses will run between Finch and St. Clair. For elevator or escalator updates, you can call the TTC's lift line at 416-539-5438 for real-time updates on what's operating.
This weekend closure follows a full week of nightly early shutdowns along this stretch of Line 1, with service ending at 11 p.m. for overnight track work.
The TTC says regular subway service will be back on Monday, March 24 at around 6 a.m. — so your weekday commute should be back to normal then.
