An urgent call from the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) is asking for "unprecedented measures" to fight COVID-19.

In a statement from the association, CMA president Dr. Ann Collins said "we are at a critical juncture where a truly national approach to combatting COVID-19 will make the difference between more or fewer lives saved."

The association made recommendations to various levels of government, which include sharing health care resources between provinces and territories "to help jurisdictions that are currently at crisis levels with ICUs and where healthcare capacity is overwhelmed."

The CMA also wants the federal government to distribute vaccines to the hardest-hit regions instead of the current per-capita approach.

It called for better supports so people can stay home if they're sick, saying "an enhanced form of paid sick leave is urgently required."

The statement also warned that "provinces/territories who are not experiencing the rate of transmission witnessed in Ontario and Quebec" need to take strong action to keep their own numbers low so they can help other regions.
