All it takes is a quick 20 minute BC Ferries ride from Vancouver, and you're on the tranquil shores of this little island. It's one of the many beautiful islands dotting the ocean in B.C., conveniently located close to the city but with enough water in between that it feels far away.

Bowen Island gained some attention in Country Living's list of "42 Ever-So-Charming Canadian Towns You'll Wish You Had Known About Sooner," which highlighted some of "the best small towns, villages, and smaller cities."

BC Ferries runs directly from West Vancouver's Horseshoe Bay to Snug Cove on Bowen Island, and you can walk or drive onto the ferry to reach the idyllic community. Docking in Snug Cove you'll step out into a picturesque harbourfront, with restaurants along the water, shops a short walk away, and views of the sparkling ocean and mountains in the distance.

Just steps away from the waterfront you'll find streets filled with local boutiques, cute cafes, and cool shops, but the little island is brimming with things to explore all over.

The Snug Cafe is a must-visit spot for freshly baked goods and a coffee to fuel your day.

Calm waters sit in sheltered bays here, with beaches peppering the shoreline for you to lay out on.

Then there's the thick forests you can wander through, and trails — like Mount Gardner — leading to incredible lookouts.

You can take your picks of tours, from kayaking and fishing adventures to cycling routes. Bowen eBikes tours can take you around the island so you can still soak in the beauty without needing to bring a car.

After a day of adventure you can relax at a restaurant in Snug Cove, taking in the views of the water before jumping back on the ferry.

If you want to escape the cty for a little bit longer there's lots of accommodations here too, and some offer especially unique accommodations like Alderwood Farm — which has a resident donkey.

Bowen Island is the perfect retreat away from the bustle of the city, and into some of the most beautiful nature around.
