This train from Toronto takes you to a hidden gem village that feels like a slice of Europe

Crystal waters and old-world streets await.

Lead Writer, Travel

You don't need a plane ticket or even a car to enjoy a little slice of Europe. This dreamy small town in Ontario feels like a vacation abroad, and it's just a train ride away from Toronto.

With crystal-water views, old-world streets and cozy shops, it's a magical place to spend a weekend or longer.

Gananoque is a charming village located in the beautiful 1000 Islands region. Set along the St. Lawrence River, this historic town offers sparkling waterfront views and old-world charm that feels like stepping back in time.

The area was first settled by United Empire Loyalists in the 1700s, including founder Joel Stone, who fled to Upper Canada following the American Revolution.

The old-world architecture can still be seen in Gananoque today, making it feel like a mini European escape.

You don't need a car to reach this hidden gem. It's about a 3-hour Via Rail ride from Toronto, perfect for a weekend escape. The Gananoque train station is a 6-minute drive from downtown, so you might need to grab a taxi upon your arrival.

Once you're in the village, there's a lot to enjoy. You can wander through the 1000 Islands History Museum to learn about the region's past, enjoy a show at the Thousand Islands Playhouse, and wander along the Gananoque Trail System.

The town is also home to a sculpture park and scenic waterfront where you can gaze across shimmering waters dotted with islands.

Downtown, you'll find cozy cafes and eateries tucked away in historic stone buildings, perfect for a coffee and book date.

If you're up for an adventure, you can enjoy a cruise around the Thousand Islands, where you'll be treated to views of castles, hidden islands and more.

Offering European vibes and late-summer magic, Gananoque is a stunning destination to visit without a pricey plane ticket.
