There Have Now Been Over 100 COVID-19 Variant Cases Confirmed In Alberta

Almost half of the cases have not been linked to travel.

On Tuesday, February 9, Dr. Deena Hinshaw delivered an Alberta COVID-19 update to inform residents about the status of variants of concern in the province.

During the address, the health official reported 195 new COVID-19 cases in the province from the past 24 hours.

In addition to the daily case count, she discussed the COVID-19 variant numbers.

Of the 104 she reported, she noted that 97 were the variant first found in the U.K., while the remaining seven were the variant first detected in South Africa

Dr. Hinshaw mentioned some public concern about one of these more contagious variants becoming the dominant strain in the province.

She said that this is a "serious worry" for her, as well. 

While the health official said "slightly less than half" of the confirmed variant cases have not been linked to travel, some of them have been linked to one another. 

She mentioned household transmission and one case from a daycare as instances in which non-travel related variant cases were transmitted in Alberta.
