Parts Of Alberta At Risk For Large Hail, Storms & Damaging Winds Today
If you had outdoor plans today than you may want to reschedule them. Several parts of Alberta are under a severe thunderstorm watch. This Alberta storm is calling for large hail and damaging winds. If you’re a fan of storm watching then this might be your dream come true.
Wacky weather has been everywhere lately.
There was even “baseball” sized hail that smashed through houses and destroyed cars not too long ago.
Looks like we aren’t in the clear just yet and while warm weather is on the horizon, so is the potential for a big storm.
According to Environment Canada, several areas of the province are under a severe thunderstorm watch on Friday, June 19.
These watches are issued when the conditions of the atmosphere are favourable for thunderstorms that can produce large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.
Environment Canada is calling for the storms to develop along the foothills in the afternoon and early evening.
The large hail does have the potential to cause damage. This means you may want to consider bringing anything you don't want to be damaged indoors.
Altogether, the watch has been issued for three parts of the province.
One of the areas is under both a severe thunderstorm watch and warning.
Global News has also reported that non-severe thunderstorms are already forming over south Calgary with heavy rain and small "pea-sized" hail.
The warning calls for a thunderstorm located near Parkland that is moving Southeast at 35 kilometres an hour.
It is also calling for heavy downpours that can cause flash floods or pooling water on roads.
Environment Canada is reminding all Canadians that if you hear thunder, the best thing to do it head indoors.
The following areas are under the watch:
- Cardston-FortMaclead-Magrath
- Crownest Pass-Pincher Creek-Waterton Lakes National Park
- Okotoks-High River-Claresholm
The Okotoks region is also under the warning.
While Albert may be in for a wet and wild Friday, New Brunswick has heat warnings.
Literally the entire province is under a heat warning as temperatures with humidex could reach up to 39 C.
