Barack Obama Responded To The 'Violence' In The US & Says It Shouldn’t Be A Surprise

"History will rightly remember today's violence at the Capitol ..."
Managing Editor, Canada

Amid the chaos and violence in the United States, ex-President Barack Obama has spoken out to share his thoughts.

In a statement shared via Twitter, the former leader said that history would “rightly” remember the events of January 6, 2021.

While he described the Capitol riots as “a moment of great dishonor and shame for our nation," he added, “we'd be kidding ourselves if we treated it as a total surprise."

Obama said the violence was a “consequence” of a political party that has been “unwilling to tell their followers the truth.”

He described incumbent President Donald Trump’s claims that he won the election as a “fantasy narrative” that has strayed further and further from reality.

The former president then pointed to other Republican leaders, who he says now must choose between “stoking the raging fires” or taking “the first steps toward extinguishing the flames.”

Obama’s statement was shared on Wednesday evening, just hours after pro-Trump activists stormed the U.S. Capitol building.

Four people were killed during the unrest, according to Global News.
