Current Vice-President Mike Pence affirmed the victory, ending any possibility that the results could be overturned.

Editor's Choice: Trump Tells Violent Protesters To 'Go Home In Peace' But Still Says Election Was Stolen

[The count] shall be deemed a sufficient declaration. Mike Pence

While Pence confirmed that the count was a “sufficient declaration,” CTV News reports that he did not offer any words of congratulations to the new administration.

His announcement goes against incumbent President Donald Trump, who has been claiming for months that he actually won the election.

Prior to this declaration from the U.S. Congress, chaos had broken out in Washington D.C. as pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the riots as an “attack on democracy” and said “violence will never succeed in overruling the will of the people.”

According to Global News, four people were killed during Wednesday’s events, which reportedly forced lawmakers and officials to hide in their offices for several hours.

While Trump urged violent demonstrators to go home in peace on Wednesday, he continued to make unsubstantiated claims of election fraud.

As the situation became increasingly tense, social media sites like Twitter and Facebook temporarily shut down Trump’s accounts.
