Attention parents, you could get so much money from Canada Child Benefit throughout 2024 to help with the cost of raising children.

With payments going out every month, this federal benefit offers up to $7,000 a year — per child!

Here's what you need to know about the Canada Child Benefit in 2024, including who's eligible for the benefit, how much money you could receive and what the payment dates are.

What is the Canada Child Benefit?

The Canada Child Benefit — which is also known as the CCB — is a tax-free monthly payment that is given out by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to eligible families to help with the cost of raising children under 18 years old.

Who is eligible for the Canada Child Benefit?

If you're wondering who can get the CCB, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • you live with a child who is under 18 years old
  • you are primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of the child
  • you are a resident of Canada for tax purposes
Also, you or your spouse or common-law partner must be any of the following:
  • a Canadian citizen
  • a permanent resident
  • a protected person
  • a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months and has a valid permit in the next month
  • an individual who is registered or entitled to be registered under the Indian Act

How do you apply for the Canada Child Benefit?

You should apply for the CCB as soon as any of the following happens:

  • your child is born
  • a child starts to live with you or returns to live with you after a temporary period with someone else
  • you begin, end, or change a shared custody arrangement
  • you get custody of a child
  • you or your spouse or common-law partner start to meet the eligibility conditions

You can apply through birth registration with your province or territory (either online or at a hospital or birthing centre), online through the CRA's My Account, or by mail.

All individuals are now required to provide proof of birth when applying for the CCB.

How much are Canada Child Benefit payments?

CCB payment amounts depend on your income and how many children you have.

The maximum CCB amount is $7,437 per year — $619.75 per month — for each child under six years old.

For each child between 6 and 17 years old, the maximum CCB amount is $6,275 per year which breaks down to $522.91 per month.

If your adjusted family net income is under $34,863, you get that maximum amount for each child, it won't be reduced.

CCB payments gradually start decreasing when your adjusted family net income is over $34,863.

So, for example, if your adjusted family net income is under $34,863 and you have two children under six years old, you could get $14,874 this year from the CCB.

What are Canada Child Benefit payment dates?

The CRA gives out CCB payments on these dates in 2024:

  • Friday, January 19, 2024
  • Tuesday, February 20, 2024
  • Wednesday, March 20, 2024
  • Friday, April 19, 2024
  • Monday, May 17, 2024
  • Thursday, June 20, 2024
  • Friday, July 19, 2024
  • Tuesday, August 20, 2024
  • Friday, September 20, 2024
  • Friday, October 18, 2024
  • Wednesday, November 20, 2024
  • Friday, December 13, 2024

If your total benefit amount for the year is less than $240, you won't receive payments every month.

You'll get a lump sum payment on this year's July payment date instead.
