A lot of federal benefits and credits that each give out hundreds of dollars are offered throughout the year.

You can get money from these payments in 2024 if you're a newcomer to Canada!

Canada Revenue Agency recently posted a reminder that "you might be eligible for benefit and credit payments, like the GST/HST credit, even if you've just arrived in Canada."

You're considered a newcomer to Canada for the first year you're a resident of Canada.

Also, according to the CRA, you become a resident of Canada for income tax purposes when you have enough residential ties in this country.

Newcomers to Canada can be permanent residents, refugees and temporary residents (which includes student permit holders).

So, here are some of the benefits, credits and payments newcomers can get in 2024.

Canada Child Benefit

The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a tax-free monthly payment to help with the cost of raising children under 18 years old.

Maximum CCB payments are $619.75 per month ($7,437 per year) for each child under six years old and $522.91 per month ($6,275 per year) for each child from 6 to 17 years old.

CCB payment dates this year are:

  • May 17, 2024
  • June 20, 2024
  • July 19, 2024
  • August 20, 2024
  • September 20, 2024
  • October 18, 2024
  • November 20, 2024

GST/HST credit

The GST/HST credit is a tax-free quarterly payment to help people with low and modest incomes offset the goods and services tax or harmonized sales tax they pay.

You could get up to $496 if you're single or $650 if you're married or have a common-law partner.

Also, you can get up to $171 for each child under 19.

GST/HST credit payment dates are:

  • April 5, 2024
  • July 5, 2024
  • October 4, 2024

Canada Carbon Rebate

Formerly known as the climate action incentive payment, the Canada Carbon Rebate is a tax-free amount to help offset the cost of federal pollution pricing.

It's available to residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I., and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Individuals can get quarterly payments between $95 and $225.

Then, additional quarterly payments between $23.75 and $112.50 are available for spouses or common-law partners and children.

Canada Carbon Rebate payment dates this year are:

  • April 15, 2024
  • July 15, 2024
  • October 15, 2024

Canada Dental Benefit

Canada Dental Benefit helps lower dental costs for families earning less than $90,000 a year.

You could be eligible if you pay for dental care for a child under 12 years old who doesn't have access to a private dental insurance plan.

There is a tax-free payment of $260, $390, or $650 available for each eligible child.

Applications are open until June 30, 2024 for:

  • dental care received between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024
  • one additional payment

Canada Learning Bond

The Canada Learning Bond (CLB) is money to help afford the cost of post-secondary education.

It provides an initial payment of $500 in a Registered Education Savings Plan and $100 for each year until the beneficiary turns 15, up to a maximum of $2,000.

Individuals who were eligible for the CLB as children but didn't receive it can apply when they reach 18 years old and until the day before they're 21 years old.
