Police Received Nearly 250,000 Tips About Possible Quarantine Cheaters In Canada

But only seven people have been charged! 😧
Managing Editor, Canada

That’s a lot of tips! According to a new report, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has flagged almost 250,000 travellers since March for potentially breaching Canada’s Quarantine Act.

Since Canada introduced travel restrictions back in March, around 1.1 million people have entered the country and were required to quarantine.

However, according to new data obtained by CBC News, almost 250,000 of these travellers were reported to police for possibly failing to do so.

247,000 Travellers flagged to police as possible quarantine violators

Despite almost a quarter of a million people being reported to police by the PHAC, only 77 fines and seven charges have been laid.

Per the report, the fines range between $275 and $1,275.

A representative from the RCMP explained that so few fines were handed out as the focus remains on “educating and encouraging” as opposed to enforcement.

Per the Quarantine Act, anybody entering Canada must quarantine for two weeks. However, there are some exceptions.

In fact, approximately 3.5 million people have come into the country since March and have been exempt from quarantining upon arrival.
