Justin Trudeau Suggests The Canada-US Border Won't Be Reopening Any Time Soon

It's unlikely you'll be able to cross for the holidays! 🇨🇦🇺🇸
Managing Editor, Canada

If you were hoping to visit America for the holidays, you may have to change-up your plans.

Justin Trudeau has suggested the Canada-US border could remain closed for a while longer yet, as he said it won’t reopen until COVID-19 is “significantly” more under control.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, per CityNews, the prime minister said that discretionary international travel into Canada is unlikely to be permitted until the pandemic improves on a global scale.

This includes the Canada-U.S. border, which remains closed to all non-essential travel.

Editor's Choice: Trudeau Responded To Elliot Page Coming Out As Trans & The Message Is So Powerful

Until the virus is significantly more under control everywhere around the world, we’re not going to be releasing the restrictions at the border Justin Trudeau

It’s a message the PM has shared in the past, previously telling reporters that he would not be comfortable reopening the border until America’s case-count declined.

Trudeau has also previously said the COVID-19 situation in the United States “continues to be of concern” to Canada.

While he’s voiced concerns multiple times in the past, it seems Trudeau and incumbent president Donald Trump haven’t always seen eye-to-eye when it comes to restarting travel.

Regardless, Trudeau has also made it clear that decisions about Canada’s borders will be “made here in Canada.”

The PM’s latest comments come just days after the country extended international travel restrictions until 20201.

The Canada-US border is scheduled to stay closed until at least December 21, 2020.
