Trudeau Says Canadians Shouldn't Worry About CERB Repayment If It's 'Causing You Anxiety'

He doesn't want people to be extra stressed at Christmas.

Canadians shouldn't have to feel anxious about CERB repayments right now, especially during the holiday season.

That's the message Justin Trudeau had during a year-end interview with CBC News.

We'll have Canadians' backs. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

The prime minister shared his thoughts on the CERB repayment process that has put Canadians who say they applied in good faith but have since been told they owe money back in a tricky position.

"We sent out those letters, but the message that I'm giving to Canadians is — if that letter is causing you anxiety, don't worry about it," Trudeau said.

He assured Canadians that they should not worry about repayments right now or even think about the January 1 deadline.

"We're going to work over the coming weeks and months to make sure that there's a path forward that makes sense," he said.

He said that the system needs to be fair while still supporting those most vulnerable.

"We're gonna work with them and I don't want people to worry over Christmas," he said.

Other Canadian leaders have also spoken up about the CERB situation and have said that it was confusing to Canadians.

"Canadians applied for the CERB in good faith to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads, and now the Liberals want to penalize over 440,000 families because the Liberals gave the wrong information," Jagmeet Singh said in a statement.

As it stands, almost one million CERB repayments have been recuperated by the CRA so far.
