People will be taking to the streets demanding action and change. A bunch of defund the police protests in Canada are taking place in different cities across the country on August 29. So far, this call to action will be happening in seven places from east to west.
The Coalition for BIPOC Liberation, in partnership with local organizations, has put together a day of action and a nationwide gathering of people from all over Turtle Island, also known as Canada.
All of these defund the police demonstrations are happening on August 29.
So far, there's going to be a day of action in Moncton, Fredericton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary and London, Ontario.
Each city has its own goal for the protests including the defunding of local law enforcement like the SPVM in Montreal and the OPP in Ontario along with federal forces like the RCMP.
There is also a call for budgets to be cut by 50% and for the money that comes from that to be reinvested in black and Indigenous communities.
The organizations involved with this day of action also want the demilitarization of police and for alternative community regulations to be used in their place for non-violent calls.
"The time is now. We don't want more tears. We don't want reform. We want real change and we won't stop till we get it," The Coalition for BIPOC Liberation said on Facebook.
In Moncton, the call to action will happen at the Moncton Skatepark at 1:00 p.m.
The protest will actually be online in Fredericton in the form of a community conversation on Zoom from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
It will centre around what defunding the police means and alternative ways to keep communities safe.
There will be a gathering in Montreal at Place des Arts at noon.
It was originally supposed to be at Cabot Square but people pointed out that the location would put Indigenous people at risk especially during the pandemic.
Ottawa's protest will happen at Parliament Hill.
In Toronto, there are two marches happening. The first one starts at 11:00 a.m. at Downsview Park. Then the second one starts at 4:00 p.m. at Christie Pits Park.
People will also gather and protest at Victoria Park in London, Ontario at 2:00 p.m.
In Calgary, this day of action will come together with the Stonewall March & Rally and get started at 2:00 p.m. at Sien Lok Park.
