Throughout the Easter long weekend, people get time off work and places are closed but Easter Monday isn't the same across the country.

So, here's what you need to know including if Easter Monday is a stat holiday, who has the day off work on Easter Monday, what's closed on Easter Monday, and more.

Since Good Friday is a stat holiday across the country and many places are closed on Easter Sunday, you might think Easter Monday — April 1, 2024 — is a holiday too.

Easter Monday isn't a stat holiday in B.C., Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I., Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

While some employers in Ontario give workers a day off on Easter Monday, it's not actually required.

Nova Scotia doesn't have Easter Monday as a stat holiday or a designated retail closing day.

However, employers in the province can provide workers with additional paid holidays throughout the year, including Easter Monday.

Also, in Yukon, employees get a paid holiday for Easter Monday only when their employer includes it as part of their employment contract.

Alberta has "optional general holidays" which are additional days employers can recognize holidays.

One of the most commonly recognized optional holidays in Alberta is Easter Monday, according to the provincial government.

Then, in Quebec, employers have the option to give workers either Good Friday or Easter Monday off as a holiday.

Even though Easter Monday isn't a holiday across the country, it is a holiday federally in Canada.

So, Easter Monday is a stat holiday for employees in federally regulated industries and workplaces like parliament, airlines, banks, Canada Post, radio and television broadcasters, telecommunications, the federal public service, and more.

That means some federal services will be shut down on April 1 this year, including Canada Revenue Agency contact centres and Service Canada locations.

Also, Canada Post doesn't deliver mail on Easter Monday and post offices are closed.
