For tonight's pre-playoff exhibition game against the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers' defenceman Ethan Bear will be displaying a very special jersey.

The name on the back of Ethan Bear's jersey will be written in the Cree syllabic as a way to honour his Indigenous heritage, according to a post made by the Oilers.

According to CTV News, the defenceman grew up near Whitewood, Saskatchewan as part of the Ochapowace Nation.

In addition to Bear's jersey, the team has also come out with a special jersey in honour of player Kailer Yamamoto's Japanese background. His jersey reads the text "Base of the mountain," in Japanese characters.

Both the jerseys are available for purchase on the Pro Am Sports website.
