The parents of a newborn are facing charges after Edmonton’s medical examiner found the baby died of severe malnutrition and dehydration.

Police say officers responded to a report of an infant in medical distress on Feb. 4.

The 25-day-old boy was sent to hospital, where he died.

The police homicide section was contacted and began investigating the next day.

Police say after an autopsy and extensive review, the medical examiner determined the baby’s death to be a homicide.

Police say the parents, a 24-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man, were each charged Thursday with failing to provide the necessaries of life and criminal negligence causing death.
