Of the 72 incidents that resulted in either a fine or a letter from Transport Canada, 50 were on a WestJet-operated flight.

In addition, of the nine fines that have been handed out since June, eight were passengers travelling on the Calgary-based airline.

Comparatively, 12 warning letters have been sent to Air Canada passengers, while two have been sent to Jazz and Air Transat travellers.

One passenger from Air North, Calm Air, Flair, KLM and Swoop have each received a formal warning notice.

According to Transport Canada, who originally issued the mandatory face mask rule in April, the fine amount varies.

Two people received a penalty of between $100 and $500, while five others were ordered to pay a fee between $501 and $1,000.

At the top end of the spectrum, two travellers were charged fines from $1,001 to $1,500 and from $1,501 to $2,000.
