A man has died in a highway collision at the same rural Saskatchewan intersection as the deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

RCMP say an SUV and a pickup truck collided Sunday afternoon near Nipawin, Sask., killing the 39-year-old driver of the SUV.

The driver of the pickup was treated in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say they believe the SUV was travelling on Highway 335, which has stop signs at the intersection, while the pickup was travelling on Highway 35, which has the right of way.

The province worked to improve safety at the intersection — clearing trees, adding rumble strips and increasing lighting and signage — after the deadly Broncos crash in 2018.

Sixteen were killed and 13 were injured when a rookie truck driver went through a stop sign at the intersection and into the path of the bus carrying the junior hockey team.
