Holiday lights in Kitchener neighbourhoods might not be taken down yet, and could continue to shine until the end of January.

The city is asking residents to leave their festive lights up in order to spread some cheer during the lockdown.

This would add some extra sparkle to outdoor and distanced celebrations.

"Seeing our neighbourhoods lit up with lights and decorations has been a wonderful way to feel connected as a community," Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic said in a press release.

"I love the idea of stretching that festive atmosphere into the new year as we continue to get outside for safe neighbourhood walks and physical activity."

The city is also encouraging residents to enjoy the snowy season by taking part in the Reimagine Winter initiative, which offers safe experiences like walking tours.

Kitchener is planning some virtual celebrations to ring in the New Year as well.
