Loblaws Is Walking Back Their Decision To Scrap 50% Off Expiring Food & The Backlash Worked

Loblaws has reversed its decision to scrap 50% off near to expiring foods just days after news broke that they would be implementing the measures.

The company confirmed to media outlets last week that instead of the 50% off, they would instead only offer 30% off on last-day sale items like prepared meals, meat, fruit, and vegetables.

Why you should care: After the initial news of the discount going down from 50% to 30%, Canadians took to social media to express their thoughts on the change.

"I really rely on the 50% stickers for meat and prepared foods," said one user on a Reddit thread on r/askTO dedicated to the topic. "I was really really disappointed to see those 30% off stickers."

What they’re saying: "We’ve listened to the feedback from our customers and colleagues and are reverting (where it existed before) to the 50% off discounts," Loblaw Public Relations said in an email to Narcity. "Customers can expect to see 50% stickers returning in the next few weeks."

ICYMI: The latest Consumer Price Index shows that from November 2023 to December 2023, the price of food went up by 0.3% and that from December 2022 to December 2023, food in general was 5% more expensive.

To help save money while shopping for food, price-matching via weekly grocery flyers can help lower the cost of your bill and shopping for certain items at Dollarama might as well.
