The Lyrid meteor shower is lighting up the night sky over Canada.

You'll be able to see the peak of this meteor shower soon, so here's what you need to know!

This meteor shower is named after the constellation Lyra and is one of the oldest meteor showers.

You can spot the Lyrids from April 14 to April 30 in 2025, but the meteor shower peaks from the night of April 21 to the early hours of April 22.

Viewing a meteor shower during the peak means you have the chance to see more shooting stars.

This year, the Lyrids could have up to 18 meteors per hour during the peak.

Since there won't be much light from the moon, the Lyrids are one of the better meteor showers in 2025.

If there is a full moon during a meteor shower, it can make fainter shooting stars invisible to the eye.

But this year, there's a crescent moon that won't rise until a few hours before dawn on April 22.

Special equipment — like a telescope or binoculars — isn't needed to see this meteor shower.

You should find a spot away from bright city lights. Once you're there, it could take 15 to 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark.

Then, find the radiant in the sky.

The radiant point of a meteor shower is the constellation it's named after. That's because meteors appear to come from that part of the sky.

If that constellation is high above the horizon, you'll likely see more meteors.

The radiant of the Lyrids is the constellation Lyra. It appears near the horizon to the northeast after sunset and moves higher in the sky throughout the night.

That means you have a better chance of seeing meteors later in the night on April 21 and into the early hours of April 22.

Looking at that part of the sky can help you spot shooting stars, but it's not the only place you can see meteors.

Meteors can actually appear anywhere in the sky!

Before you head out to see the Lyrids, you should check the local weather forecast because clouds will block your view of meteors.

Good luck!
