Canada Was Just Ranked The Most Accepting Country In The World For Migrants

We topped the list! A ranking of the most accepting countries for migrants was put out and Canada made it in the number one spot. This is also the first time that we've beat out every other country.

Gallup, a global analytics and advice firm, has released its second Migrant Acceptance Index. 

In 2019, Canada was the most accepting country in the world for newcomers with a score of 8.46 out of a possible 9.0 on the index.

That's the highest score of any nation which makes us first in the ranking for the first time.

Iceland was close behind in second with a score of 8.41 while the U.S. was ranked sixth with a score of 7.95.

This is all based on three questions that people in 140 countries were asked in 2016 and 2017 and then in 145 countries in 2019.

They asked if people think migrants living in their country, becoming their neighbours and marrying into their families are good or bad things.

In Canada, 94% of people said that having them live in their country is a good thing and 95% said the same thing about them being their neighbours.

When it comes to marrying into the family, there was a slight drop off with 91% of people calling it a good thing.

When this is broken down based on age, Canadians who are between 30 and 44 years old are the most accepting of migrants.

That's followed closely by people between the ages of 45 and 54.

Canadians who are 15 years old to 29 years old had the lowest score of acceptance but that could be because they're a smaller group than the other age brackets.

Canada had made it onto Gallup's Migrant Acceptance Index for 2017 but was ranked fourth with a score of 8.14

So, the country has made some big upwards moves here!
