One day after the prime minister said that the country was standing ready to help, it was announced that Canada's support for Beirut is more than just talk.

Development Canada announced in a series of tweets on Wednesday, August 5, that the country would be giving humanitarian aid to Lebanon after it was devastated by an explosion in the capital on Tuesday.

$5 Million

toward helping Lebanon

The first $1.5 million injection of cash is "going immediately to trusted partners on the ground" like the Red Cross, read the tweet.

Development Canada says that the money should assist with things like emergency services, shelter, and food.

According to the New York Times, Lebanon's Health Minister said 135 people died in the explosion with another 5,000 injured and more missing.
