Trudeau's Throne Speech Promises To Extend CEWS But CERB Will End This Week
During Wednesday’s throne speech in the Senate, one thing was made clear. A CERB extension is not happening.
While the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) will be continued through until next summer, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) will end as scheduled this week.
Instead of extending the CERB, the Liberal government says they’ll create over 1 million jobs in Canada.
This will be done by “investments in the social sector and infrastructure, immediate training to quickly skill up workers, and incentives for employers to hire and retain workers."

In order to avoid a federal election this fall, Trudeau’s speech needs to have ensured the support of at least one other party.
However, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh had asked him to extend the CERB and implement paid sick leave, and the PM has promised neither of those things.
In a social media post just moments after the speech ended, Singh tweeted to say, "This PM has shown us that his actions don't match his empty words."
He added, "It doesn't need to be this way."
What happens next remains to be seen.
