It's no secret that the price of food and groceries in Canada in 2024 is hitting a lot of people in the wallet, and a recent post on Reddit showing what prices at Loblaws looked like a few years ago might make it even more painful.

On February 14, a user uploaded a picture with the caption, "Deleting photos off my phone and I saw this screenshot from June 2019."

The flyer showed deals for Gay Lea butter on sale for $2.99, Kraft Singles for $2.99 and a pack of Coca-Cola for $6.47 among other discounted items.

Today, that Gay Lea butter will cost you $8.49 (or $5.99 at the current sale price in the West End of Toronto), the Kraft Singles cost $6.29 and the Coca-Cola costs $12.99.

In the comment section, people had some strong thoughts about the increase in price over the years.

"Who knew the good old days weren't so long ago..." one person said of the deals.

"Lol this flyer in 2024 would cause riots and shortages," said another.

"What a pipe dream," wrote one user. "They actually look affordable."

While the prices of 2019 seem unlikely to be making a comeback anytime soon, according to the Consumer Price Index, some foods across Canada also went up in price month over month in 2023.

In particular, cookies and crackers increased by 2.3% from November to December, apples went up 1.5%, bananas went up 1.8%, lettuce went up 2.7% and frozen and dried vegetables went up 2.8%.

These prices are confirmed at the time of publishing, but they can change at any time. Taxes and fees may not be included.
