As cases of COVID-19 in Canada continue to climb, the country’s top doctor has spoken out.

In a message shared on September 30, Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam admitted that there’s been a “worrying increase in daily cases” in some regions.

For the second time in just a few days, she reiterated the importance of working together to stop the situation from getting worse.

Things have escalated quickly and will escalate further unless we work together to #SlowtheSpread.

Dr. Tam explained that Canada’s daily case count has reached “a level not seen since the peak of daily cases in April.”

She noted that an average of 1,471 new people are testing positive every day across the country, a trend which she said is “the same, only different…”

The reason the situation has changed, Tam continued, is because more and more young people continue to be diagnosed with the illness.

The top doctor took the opportunity to remind Canadians that COVID-19 can be “severe” at any age.

As of September 29, Canada's total number of confirmed cases had topped 156,000.
