The city’s top doctor has shared a worrying update. On September 23, Dr. Vera Etches admitted that Ottawa is “close to red” on the pandemic scale.

Speaking to city council on Wednesday morning, Dr. Etches confirmed that while the city remains in the orange phase of the pandemic, it’s becoming increasingly closer to red.

According to CBC News, the colours represent the status of COVID-19 in the community. Orange indicates fewer outbreaks and less spread, while red is the highest warning level.

This comes as the city continues to report high-numbers of new COVID-19 cases.

The region has not moved into the red phase just yet, Etches explained, because local hospitalization levels have remained stable.

However, this could soon change.

"I'm watching hospitalizations," the doctor confirmed on Wednesday.
