Trudeau Says Canada 'Could Be' The Best Country In The World (VIDEO)

Canada "could be" the best country in the world. That was the message from the prime minister this July 1. While Trudeau’s Canada Day speech acknowledged how “hard” recent months have been, he also spoke about moving forward and building “a better country.” 

Speaking from Rideau Cottage on July 1, the prime minister had a Canada Day message to share.

“On Canada Day, we celebrate the amazing place we call home – and the people we share it with,” Trudeau began.

Describing the day as an opportunity to reflect on “where we are as a country,” he acknowledged the difficult few months that many people have had.

Despite the hardships, Canadians have “been there for one another,” the PM continued.

“We are neighbours helping neighbours, small businesses being there for their communities and their staff, Armed Forces answering the call to help protect our most vulnerable, and doctors and nurses keeping our families healthy.”

“Because that’s what it means to be Canadian,” he said.

Trudeau went on to attribute Canada’s success to its people, who “strive to live up to our shared values of peace, equality, and compassion, and know that diversity is our strength.”

“Only together we can build a better country, where every senior has a safe place to live, and where we say no to racism, injustice, and hate,” he said.

“What makes Canada special is not the belief that this is the best country in the world ... it’s the knowledge that we could be,” Trudeau concluded.

He added that no challenge would ever be too great, as long as Canadians can face it together.

Urging people to get involved in the virtual Canada Day celebrations this year, the prime minister added, “Happy Canada Day, everyone!”

While July 1 celebrations will look a little different in 2020, there's still plenty going on, including virtual fireworks and musical performances by some of Canada's most iconic stars.
