Second Cup Is Opening 14 New 'Non-Traditional' Stores In Canada Over The Next Year

More changes could be on the way too.
Senior Writer

Shaking up the coffee game. Second Cup is planning on opening 14 new "non-traditional" stores throughout Canada over the next year so there will be different, more unique places to get your cup of joe. Plus, there are other changes expected to happen soon as well.

While some companies are closing stores throughout the country and restructuring their brands, Second Cup is actually going to be growing through a different approach.

The Canadian coffee chain announced its plans for the future on August 7.

A major part of the growth is developing what is being called "non-traditional" cafes.

That includes stores in hospitals, airports, train stations, other transportation spots and more places that are different from the stand-alone coffee shops we're used to.

Over the next 18 months, 14 locations like that are expected to open across Canada.

Another change that's coming is that Second Cup coffee is going to be made available at grocery stores and other retailers.

That's because those businesses have seen growth during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company also has its own e-commerce shop that launched back in April where you can buy its branded coffee, tea, hot chocolate and more.

Drive-thru locations are also expected to open at three Petro-Canada stations in Ontario this year.

Second Cup hopes that there will be an opportunity to deepen that relationship in 2021, leading to even further expansion of their drive-thru initiative.

In July, a Second Cup location in Toronto was turned into a weed store through the company's own retail cannabis brand.

Six more are getting ready to open in Ontario as well.

There is also a goal to make Second Cup the first national coffee chain to sell CBD beverages.

By contrast, Starbucks is expected to close up to 200 locations in Canada over the next two years as part of its restructuring process.
