I Tried Tim Hortons' New Winter Drinks & One Tastes Like An Iced Capp For Grown-Ups

How delicious does a Marble Swirl Hot Chocolate sound?

Tim Hortons has just announced the launch of some new beverages on their menu, so I decided to give them a try to get y'all the scoop on the drinks.

On February 5, the company shared that customers can now "sip on some delicious new hot and cold drinks including Fudge Brownie Lattes and Marble Swirl Hot Chocolates."

I got my hands on three of the drinks at my local Timmies in the West End of Toronto, and here's how my taste test went down.

The first two drinks I tried out were the hot and iced Fudge Brownie Latte, which is handcrafted with freshly ground espresso beans, Fudge Brownie syrup and your choice of either dairy or dairy alternative, of which I selected 2% milk.

The hot drink is supposed to be finished off with a layer of whipped topping and "delicious marble chocolate curls," but when I opened my drink, I didn't see any sign of whipped topping or chocolate, so I'm not sure if it melted into the drink or perhaps it was forgotten in this beverage.

The hot Fudge Brownie Latte tastes like a stronger, elevated version of a mocha — if you're craving a strong caffeine hit with a bit of sweetness, I'd say that this is the drink you're aiming for as it packs a good hit of espresso. It's not overly sweet, which I personally like, but I will say the Fudge Brownie syrup doesn't taste overly noticeable.

I like this drink, but I'm not sure I'd order it again — perhaps the whipped topping and chocolate curls would've won me over a little bit more!

If you like Iced Capps but feel like they're too sweet or rich, the new Fudge Brownie Iced Latte might just be your new best friend.

This drink is like an adult version of an Iced Capp — while we all know and love the drink, we also know we're now in our 20s and 30s and sometimes a cup full of cream and sugar will lead to unfortunate consequences as our stomach is no longer as hardy as it once was.

The espresso has a stronger presence than the coffee does in the Iced Capp, and the Fudge Brownie adds a good amount of sweetness without making you feel like you're going to have a wild sugar crash at 2 p.m.

I'm super into it, and I think it's what I'll start ordering in the summer when I want a little treat — just make sure you swirl the drink with your straw before you start sipping as the syrup settled quite a bit at the bottom of the cup.

I love Tims hot chocolate, so I was eager to try this new item which they describe as a decadent treat to enjoy all winter long.

The new Marble Swirl Hot Chocolate features a swirl of whipped topping and marble chocolate curls and if you prefer, you can swap the base to white hot chocolate.

I opted for the original base, and my goodness, it's a treat.

The Marble Swirl Hot Chocolate is thick, delightful and very velvety, and the addition of the whipped topping and chocolate on top is a nice touch.

This is my favourite drink I tried, but it definitely falls into the "once in a while" category for me as it's very sweet and over the top.

The verdict

"Whether you're at the ice rink, taking the kids tobogganing, or running errands on a cold Canadian winter day, nothing completes the experience quite like having a hot and delicious beverage from Tims in your hands," says Carolina Berti, Vice President of Category and Innovation at Tim Hortons.

"We've crafted a new collection of winter beverages to give guests some new flavour experiences to savour and get cozy with throughout the season."

Of all the drinks I tried, I enjoyed the Marble Swirl Hot Chocolate the most, but I'm most likely to order the Fudge Brownie Iced Latte again.

That being said, if you're able to, I discovered a delicious "hack" while trying to finish up all the beverages: if you combine the Fudge Brownie Latte and the Marble Swirl Hot Chocolate, you get the best of both worlds with strong espresso flavours and delightful chocolatey sweetness.

If you're looking to add something to munch on to your order, you might want to try out the four retro donuts Tim Hortons brought back to their menu in honour of their 60th birthday.

"We're celebrating 60 Years of Keeping it Fresh throughout the year at Tims with a series of experiences for guests that will have a spirit of modern nostalgia — nods to the past but also celebrating the Tims of today and the future," said Hope Bagozzi, chief marketing officer for Tim Hortons.

"We wanted to kick off our 60th anniversary year with a bang and we can't wait to re-introduce Canadians to four retro donuts that were most popular historically among our guests."

The Dutchie, Blueberry Fritter, Cinnamon Sugar Twist and Walnut Crunch are all currently around to be enjoyed, but you'll have to enjoy them while you can as they might disappear from the menu at any time.

Sounds like the perfect drink and snack combo for your next Timmies run!
