You Can Be Fined Up To $100,000 For Not Wearing A Face Mask In A GTA City (VIDEO)

Next time you leave your house, don't forget a face covering. Wearing a face mask in Brampton is now mandatory, and anyone who doesn't follow the rules could face a hefty fine. Mayor Brown announced that some could be facing charges of up to $100,000 if they are spotted without the protective gear. 

After a week of warnings and complaints, the City of Brampton has decided to crack down on residents caught indoors without a face covering. 

The bylaw states that customers and businesses caught not adhering to the mandatory mask rule could be fined anywhere from $500 to $100,000.

“In the case of a continuing offence, for each day or part of a day that the offence continues, a minimum fine not exceeding $500, and a maximum fine not exceeding $10,000, and the total of all daily fines for the offence is not limited to $100,000,” reads a description from the bylaw.

The crackdown on mask violators comes after a week-long adjustment period, which allowed those caught not obeying the new rule to walk away with a warning.

Mayor Patrick Brown announced an end to the grace period this week while pointing to 51 complaints the City had received this month.

“We haven’t laid charges yet. We’ve been giving warnings. But we are now at the point wherein indoor public spaces face coverings are mandatory,” Brown said, according to the Brampton Guardian. 

“We need to stick together, we need to understand [and] we need to understand [that] we need to follow the advice of public health, and we can’t have anyone ignoring the advice of public health and putting everyone else in peril,” he added.

This isn’t the first time Brampton has been forced to teach its residents a lesson about COVID-19 restrictions.

Parking lot parties became an issue for the city back in May, which resulted in numerous charges being handed out to violators.

The City was also forced to shut down 24 house parties in one week after people were caught not following social distancing bylaws.
