A New Toronto Project Could Bring High-Speed Internet To More Parts Of The City

The project could mean more public Wi-Fi in Toronto, as well.

A new project called "ConnectTO" could see more affordable high-speed internet in Toronto in neighbourhoods across the city.

The project was announced Thursday in a press release from the City of Toronto, and it involves charging private companies to use city resources in order to lower the cost of internet bills for Torontonians.

Late 2021 When ConnectTO would be launched

According to a report made by the city, Toronto should create a "city-wide high-speed internet network" which they would then charge private internet service providers to access.

That money would generate revenue for the city to reinvest in communities and lower internet costs for "vulnerable Torontonians."

The report must be approved by Toronto's Executive Committee, which meets next Wednesday, before it's presented at City Council on February 2 and 3.

If it's approved by City Council, the project would launch in a few test neighbourhoods — Jane and Finch, Golden Mile, and Malvern — in late 2021.

If that goes well, the project could be launched across the city by early 2022.

If ConnectTO is approved, the city will also consider internet connectivity planning, public Wi-Fi, and laying fibre cables in all future construction projects and initiatives.
