Hundreds Of Juneteenth Protestors Are Sitting In The Middle Of Toronto Streets (VIDEO)

Toronto streets are full of action this Friday. Hundreds of Juneteenth Toronto protestors are currently gathering for a sit-in on one of the city's most popular streets. The crowd is part of a worldwide movement to defund police services.

The protest, which started at 12 p.m. on Friday was organized by activist group Not Another Black Life (NABL). 

According to the group, the sit-in is meant to show support for defunding Toronto's Police Services and will end at 6 p.m. on Friday outside of City Hall. 

"Friday, June 19th! ABOLISH THE POLICE JUNETEENTH SIT IN! From 12-6 p.m. beginning at College & Bay ending at City Hall. We are occupying Bay st for a peaceful sit-in and celebration of Freedom & Liberation, with demands to defund the Toronto police to abolishing the police," read a statement on the group's event page. 

Footage of the sit-in has already begun popping up on social media.

In the videos, crowds of demonstrators can be seen sitting down and participating in a unity clap while chanting, "No justice, no peace, abolish the police."

The crowd is completely blocking College and Bay, which currently remains closed to traffic. 

The protest is part of the Juneteenth moment that is currently taking place across the globe. 

The day marks "the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States," according to Juneteenth.com.

Crowds also gathered on College Street early on Friday morning to paint the message "defund the police" outside of the Toronto Police Services headquarters.

The Black Lives Matter twitter page filmed the event which showed activists chanting, cheering, and dancing throughout the protest.

Toronto police reported on Friday that they were aware of the demonstrations but would not be taking action to shut them down.

"We are aware of a demonstration planned in the downtown core today. Everyone has the lawful right to peacefully protest. College St is closed from Yonge Street to Bay Street," read a tweet by TPS.
