Justin Trudeau Sent A Heartwarming Message To Family Of The Toronto Mosque Stabbing Victim

Hatred has no place in Canada. That was the message from Justin Trudeau as he expressed his sadness over the recent death of Mohamed-Aslim Zafis who was stabbed outside of a Toronto mosque on September 12. The Prime Minister took to Twitter to speak directly to the victim's loved ones while simultaneously standing with the Muslim community.

"My heart goes out to the loved ones of Mohamed-Aslim Zafis. The reports that his murder was motivated by Neo-Nazism and Islamophobia are extremely concerning. We stand with Muslim communities against such hatred, which has no place in Canada. We are with you," he said in the tweet.

Police identified the victim as Mohamed-Aslim Zafis, 58, who they say was sitting outside of a mosque when he was fatally stabbed. He later died at the scene. 

Police arrested and charged Von Neutegem, 34, with first-degree murder. 

Officials said there did not appear to be any motive and that the victim and suspect did not know each other, according to CBC.

While Trudeau referenced hate and neo-nazis in his message, on Tuesday, Toronto police spokesperson, Meaghan Gray, said investigators are still confirming whether or not there was in fact a motive.

"If we discover evidence that may suggest the murder was motivated by hate, that information would be shared with our Hate Crime investigators and Crown Attorneys," she told Narcity.

"It would ultimately be the decision of the Attorney General as to whether or not hate crime charges are applicable."

However, it seems that the Prime Minister's tweet along with other members of the Toronto mosque are not quite convinced. 

According to CTV News, the Muslim community is calling on police to investigate the murder of Zafis as a hate-motivated crime, calling it a “ brazen act of violence” that has shaken the community."
