The Ontario Provincial Police is warning drivers of a new Ontario highway scam in which travellers are swindled out of their cash.

The OPP says scammers tend to pull their vehicles over on highways, ramps, or in parking lots and try to flag down other drivers. They will pretend to be stranded or suffering some kind of emergency and claim they require money for gas or repairs.

The perpetrators tend to be been well-dressed and are often driving rental vehicles.

There has been a trend in which they then apparently offer up counterfeit gold jewelry in exchange for funds as fake collateral.

The scam has reportedly been noted in particular on the province's 400-series highways.
