As Ontario reports its second day of over 2,000 new infections, Toronto's COVID-19 cases today are the highest yet.

Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted the province's numbers Wednesday morning. Of Ontario's 2,139 new cases, 850 of them are in Toronto.*

The news comes just five days before Toronto and Peel's 28-day lockdowns are scheduled to end.

The lockdown came into effect on Monday, November 23, and is set to expire on December 21.

It's unclear whether the measures will be extended. However, Mayor John Tory has expressed his support for continued restrictions during the holiday season.

On Tuesday, Ontario reported its highest count yet with 2,275 cases and an additional 20 deaths.

To date, the province has recorded 144,396 novel coronavirus infections.
