Toronto's Mass Vaccination Clinic Has Temporarily Closed Due To A 'Vaccine Shortage'

The proof-of-concept clinic was only open for two days.

The provincial government has directed Toronto's mass vaccination clinic to immediately pause operations after only two days of being open.

A news release from the city of Toronto on Tuesday announced that the temporary closure is "due to vaccine shortage."

The mass vaccination clinic opened on Monday, operating out of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, and was expected to run for at least six weeks.

But that same day, Toronto's Dr. Eileen de Villa said dose shipments will decrease by up to 80% while Pfizer's Norway site upgrades its production capacity.

That same day the City of Toronto announced that the clinic would temporarily close after Friday, January 22, due to "ongoing issues with the Pfizer vaccine supply."

But just a day later, on Tuesday, the City of Toronto issued an update saying the province was directing the clinic to "immediately" pause operations — three days earlier than expected.

"People with scheduled appointments for tomorrow Wednesday, January 20, Thursday, January 21 and Friday, January 22 are being advised now that their appointments are cancelled," Tuesday's press release reads.

"The City’s Immunization Task Force is continuing to plan for city-wide immunization clinic roll-out and will continue to work with the Province to determine next steps once vaccine supply is re-established."
