Toronto & Peel's Stay-At-Home Order Just Got Extended While York Moves Into The Red Zone

Another region is also moving from orange to red due to worsening cases.

On Friday afternoon, the province announced that Toronto's stay-at-home order will stay in place until early March, along with Peel Region and North Bay-Parry Sound.

These measures will remain for just over two weeks due to concerning infection rates in these regions.

These are difficult but necessary decisions, in order to protect against COVID-19 variants and maintain the progress we have all made together. Health Minister Christine Elliot

The new tentative end date of the stay-at-home order and shutdown is Monday, March 8.

Meanwhile, York Region will transition into the red-control zone of the provincial reopening framework on Monday, February 22. This means that it will no longer be under a stay-at-home order.

Another region is already moving into a more restrictive zone on Monday.

Lambton Public Health will be moving from the orange zone to the red zone on Monday, "as a result of worsening public health trends in the region over the past week," the province states.

Before Friday's announcement, the regions of Toronto, Peel, York and North Bay Parry Sound were the only ones remaining under the stay-at-home order.

The province states that while transmission rates have gone down in both Toronto and Peel, daily cases remain too high to loosen restrictions, especially with the presence of new variants.

"During this same period of time, North Bay Parry Sound District has also seen its case rate increase by 11.5 per cent to 14.6 cases per 100,000 people," the province states.

Dr. de Villa has also expressed concern about the new variants. "By the time the confirmed case counts are big enough to shock us, it will be too late to do anything," she said on Wednesday.

Ultimately, says Mayor John Tory, the extension of the stay-at-home order is to avoid another shutdown in three to five weeks in these hot spot regions.
