A 37-year-old woman is facing charges after ramming her car into a Pickering home which then caught fire, according to police.

"On Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at approximately 5:30 p.m., members from West Division responded to a call regarding a female driving a vehicle into the garage door of a residence," the Durham Regional Police Service wrote in a media release issued on August 25. "She repeatedly drove into the garage door until it broke and she continued driving into the residence."

"The vehicle caught fire, which subsequently ignited the residence," police continued.

An eyewitness video of the incident emerged on YouTube yesterday. The graphic video, which is nearly 24 minutes long, contains language and visuals that some viewers might find disturbing.

Pickering Fire Services managed to get the flames under control. The Fire Marshal was also present at the scene to investigate.

"We had every truck in the city there that we have, so we had five trucks there at one point," Deputy Fire Chief of Pickering, Steve Boyd, told Narcity over the phone. "All of our manpower committed to it, as well as Ajax on standby, to look after any additional calls that we might have had at the time."

Boyd added that it took about 30 minutes to contain the fire.

The woman left her car and fled from the property, but was soon found close by. She has been apprehended under the Mental Health Act and charged with arson causing damage to property, dangerous operation of a conveyance, mischief/damage of over $5000, and mischief to property endangering life.

The woman was held for a bail hearing.
