This small town in B.C. has preserved a time in its history, to the point where you feel like you're stepping back in time when visiting. The community takes it to another level during the holidays though, with their 'old-fashioned Christmas' featuring sparkling streets, sleigh rides, and carolling.

The event is on December 14 and 15, starting at 9:30 a.m. and running until 5 p.m., and costs $12 for adults. You can tour around the historic town, taking in the over 125 heritage buildings and period displays.

The town is a "living testament to BC's golden beginnings," the town website says. It's actually the "largest living history museum in western North America," and pretty fun to visit any time of year if you're a history buff especially. You'll find an old school house, blacksmith, merchants, and lots of exhibits.

The Christmas celebrations really bring the town to life though, with a fresh blanket of snow covering the town, and lots of fun events to get you into the festive mood.

There's a morning and evening drum circle, guided tours, a concert, and a Christmas tale reading during the weekend-long event.

Barkerville is a bit of a journey depending on where you're going from, as it's a nine-hour drive from Vancouver. As the main town of the Cariboo Gold Rush though it's a unique spot to visit, and extra special during its holiday events.
