This little city isn't really top of mind when your think of getaways from Vancouver, but that only adds to the charm of it. It has less crowds than other B.C. destinations, but just as much beauty and adventure at its doorstep.

Often used as a pit-stop on a Vancouver Island road trip (Tofino bound!), Nanaimo is a small city that has an eclectic feel to it. The cool boutiques and funky coffee shops lend themselves to a trip full of thrifting finds and a camera roll brimming with artsy shots.

Coming from Vancouver you're journey to the little seaside town starts with ocean views. BC Ferries takes you sailing across the water from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo.

Arriving downtown you'll find picturesque streets lined with heritage buildings, where local shops and restaurants are tucked away inside. Commercial street is where to go to get your vintage fix, and you've got to grab some fish and chips (as any harbour city vacation calls for).

The city itself is fun to explore, while being small enough that you can see a lot in a short amount of time. Like many places on Vancouver Island though, the real beauty is the backdrop.

Surrounding the lively city streets of Nanaimo is rugged coastline, lush forests, hidden wonders, and untamed natural beauty.

It's the perfect place to base a trip from for exploring the island, but you don't need to go far to feel like you're in the thick of the wilderness.

Trails wind their way throughout the city — from rainforest hikes and cliffs overlooking the coast to mountain summits. Mount Benson is one of the more popular options, giving hikers a view of the city, sea, and jagged mountain peaks.

Jack Point and Biggs Park is another favourite, known for its beautiful sandstone rock formations and sea caves.

On land exploration is basically limitless here, but a trip isn't complete without getting out on the ocean. There's whale watching, boating, kayaking, and fishing for all anyone who wants to get some salty air in their lungs.

From rugged beauty and outdoor adventures to city shopping and foodie finds, this little city packs in a lot into a trip.
