Justin Trudeau Says US Election Results Could Take Days Or 'Even Longer'

It depends on how fast states count ballots.
Senior Writer

When will we know who is president? That's the question weighing on Canadian's minds as we await the U.S. election results.

There have been more than 20,000 Google searches for that particular question across Canada on November 3 alone. But a winner may not actually be declared on election night due to the sheer number of mail-in ballots sent in as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Plus, many states across the U.S. are reporting huge voter turnouts

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canadians are preparing for the possibility that we may have to wait longer than expected to find out who the next U.S. president will be.

There is a possibility that we won't know results until tomorrow morning or even later in the week or even longer than that. Justin Trudeau

“Many of us remember the 2000 elections that took a number of weeks before determining who would be sworn in in January,” Trudeau said. “We’re going to continue to watch and stand up for Canadian interests every step of the way.”

President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden need 270 electoral votes to win.

According to NJ.com, when we learn the results will depend on when several key states like Florida, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin finish counting ballots.

Some states can count ballots before the actual day of the election but some have to wait, which could lead to delays.
