There is a lot of discussion flying around right now about the Whole Foods poppy ban, and it's got people bringing up Don Cherry.

On November 6, shortly after the news broke about the retailer forbidding its employees from wearing poppies, the controversial commentator appeared to be back on people's minds and was trending on Twitter.

The discussion seemed to oscillate back and forth between those talking up Cherry's dedication to veterans and respect for Remembrance Day and others reiterating that he was fired for xenophobic remarks.

The former Coach's Corner host was fired by Sportsnet in November 2019 for controversial comments he made on the air while talking about wearing poppies.

"You people that come here, whatever it is, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey," he said, "At least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that."

At the time, Cherry was criticized for seemingly targeting immigrants with his message about wearing the Remembrance Day symbol.

Cherry denied that he was talking about immigrants when he said "you people," and instead claimed that he meant it more in a general sense.

His ouster from the network also started a trend of people calling for a boycott of Sportsnet.
