BC Landlords Aren't Allowed To Raise Your Rent Until Summer 2021

COVID-19 has been financially burdensome on many. As a result, a B.C. rent freeze was put into action that would expire in December 2020. 

Now, the provincial government announced on Monday, November 9 that the freeze which bans landlords from raising rent prices will stay in place until July 10, 2021.

The extension is effective immediately, said the province in a press release emailed to Narcity.

We know many renters are still facing income loss and even the slightest increase in rent could be extremely challenging. For that reason, we are extending the freeze on rent increases to provide more security for renters during the pandemic Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing

"We are all in this together, and it is important for both renters and landlords that people can stay in their homes," she continued. 

The release explains that any renter who gets a rent increase notice should disregard it and continue to pay their current rent amount.

With B.C.'s COVID-19 curve trending upward once again, the province has instated much stricter gathering restrictions that make it so locals can only visit with their immediate household in the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health regions. 

Thankfully, an unexpected rent increase is something that B.C. renters won't need to worry about for a little while longer.
