Canada Is Recalling Clams That Could Cause Paralysis & Death
Canadians are being warned away from yet another food item. This time, a Canada food recall has been issued for a specific type of clams. They should not be eaten as they can cause paralysis and even death.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced on September 22 that Evergreen International Foodstuffs Ltd. would be recalling Manila clams from the market place.
This is due to the presence of a specific marine biotoxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning.
The recalled clams have a harvest date of September 16, 2020, and a processing date of September 17, 2020. The lot number on affected products is 21057.

The CFIA notes that the clams may have been sold in bulk or in smaller packages. They might not have the same brand, product name, or code.
They were distributed in British Columbia and Ontario.
Marine biotoxins can accumulate naturally in many different types of shellfish, but can be extremely dangerous if ingested.
Symptoms of paralytic shellfish poisoning can include tingling or numbness in your tongue, hands, or feet, headaches, drowsiness, and difficulty swallowing.
More serious symptoms can develop in extreme cases. These include incoherent speech, weakness, rapid pulse, and stiffness or non-coordination of the limbs.
In the most severe instances, respiratory paralysis can occur and cause death within two to 12 hours. People experiencing this symptom must be placed under respiratory care in hospital.
There is no known cure for paralytic shellfish poisoning. If you think you might have it, seek medical attention immediately.
It is also important to note that these toxins, unlike some other foodborne illnesses, can not be destroyed through the cooking process.
There have not been any reports of illnesses related to the affected products. If you have any recalled products in your home, they should be thrown out or returned.
The recall was triggered by CFIA test results, and the agency is conducting a food safety inspection. This may lead to recalls of other products.
