Canada is Making It Easier For People From Hong Kong To Get Permanent Residency

The move could "drive Canada’s economy forward."

Canada is now making it easier for residents of Hong Kong to receive permanent residency.

The Government of Canada announced the news in a release Thursday, citing that people from that region have historically given back to Canada's economic, social and political life.

Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced many actions that could inevitably aid more Hong Kong residents to come to Canada.

What's more, the release also cited the region's "deteriorating human rights situation," as one of the reasons for the move.

Starting February 8, 2021, Hong Kong residents will have the chance to apply for a work permit, which will be valid for up to three years.

They can then apply for permanent residency in the future.

"The launch of the Hong Kong immigration pathway is a historic initiative that will attract young, talented and experienced graduates who will help to drive Canada’s economy forward," Mendicino said.

As a requirement, residents have to have graduated with a Canadian post-secondary diploma or degree within the last five years or have a similar "foreign credential."

However, applicants from overseas will have to adhere to current travel restrictions for now.
