A Canadian airline was just ranked #2 in the world — But it wasn't Air Canada

It ranked above major airlines like Virgin Australia, British Airways and Delta. ✈️

A Canadian airline just landed the number two spot on a global ranking of the best hybrid airlines for 2025 — but, perhaps surprisingly, it wasn't Air Canada. While Canada's largest airline did make the complete list, it was another homegrown carrier that stole the spotlight.

Hybrid airlines have been changing the game in air travel, according to AirlineRatings.com, offering a mix of low-cost perks with some full-service comforts. These carriers have been gaining popularity over the years as travellers look for something in between budget airlines and luxury carriers, and it turns out one Canadian airline is totally nailing that balance.

AirlineRatings.com's global ranking of the best hybrid airlines for 2025 was released on February 8, scoring airlines based on features like reclining seats and in-flight entertainment.

To be considered a hybrid airline, the carrier must offer a minimum seat pitch of 30 inches in economy class and provide complimentary non-alcoholic beverages.

While airlines from the U.S. and Europe dominate the list, one Canadian carrier managed to edge out some of the biggest names in the industry to claim the number two spot worldwide. That's a pretty big deal, especially considering it beat out major airlines like Virgin Australia, British Airways, United Airlines and Delta.

So, which airline took the crown for Canada? It was none other than WestJet. The Calgary-based airline has been making big moves over the past few years, shifting from its budget roots into a more premium experience, especially on international routes. While economy passengers on shorter flights still get that budget-friendly experience, longer flights now have more perks.

And while WestJet claimed the number two spot, Air Canada also made the cut, earning recognition as one of the world's top hybrid airlines. Though it didn't rank as high as its Canadian competitor, the airline's mix of budget-friendly options and premium services helped secure its place among the best hybrid global carriers
